Back to List of Artists Phyllis Putvain Phyllis grew up with ten siblings on a tenant farm in Stowe in the 1930’s. Money was never in great supply. Times were tough, and yet in spite of the hardships she experienced her whole life, she produced a continuous flow of beautiful paintings. She had been a regular participant at the Greensboro Town Hall community workshop since 1981. She never had much time to draw or paint prior to then because she was raising her six children. Phyllis said her pictures were all real in her mind. "I’ve always wanted to be free, not tied down. When I was about twelve all I could think of was a pretty house with curtains".
Phyllis Putvain passed away suddenly in September, 1996 at the age of 60.
